By now we've traveled together enough times to know it's never the big things that trip us up on a couples trip — it's the small logistics nobody warns you about. Take hotel outlets: there are always two, always hiding behind the nightstand or the TV, and somehow my husband and I are both trying to charge a phone, a watch, and whatever else at the exact same time every single morning. It's a small thing. It's also, at 6 a.m. before coffee, a real thing.

Then there's my husband and his keys. At home I genuinely cannot tell you how many times he's asked me where his car keys are, and the answer is always the same: not in my purse, because they're his. We finally put trackers on both sets of car keys and his wallet, plus one on my stepdaughter's keys, since she only ever got the one. He still refuses to open the app and find it himself — "I'll just find it myself" — but at least now I can find it for him.

Flying is where the next fix came from. We used to share one pair of headphones back and forth on the plane like that was ever going to work — someone's always mid-show when the other one wants them back. Once we each had our own, that whole tiny argument just disappeared. He gets his noise, I get mine, and nobody's reaching across the armrest asking for theirs back.

And then there's what actually happens once we stop moving. I read by the pool, which used to mean a paperback with sunscreen fingerprints all over the pages by day two — so now it's a Kindle instead, and my hands can be as greasy as they want. At night, our little noise machine comes with us so wherever we are, the room sounds like home the second the lights go off. It sounds like a small thing until you're both actually asleep instead of lying there cataloging every noise in the hallway.

Charging Without the Fight

Remember those two outlets I mentioned, always hiding behind the nightstand or the TV? This is what actually fixed it. We started packing a voltage converter charging station in the suitcase, plugging it into that single available outlet, and just like that everyone's devices — phones, watches, whatever needs a USB port that morning — are already charged when we wake up. No more unplugging the lamp to steal its outlet, no more 6 a.m. negotiating over whose phone gets to hit 100% first.

Finding Each Other's Stuff

It's the same idea as the trackers we put on the kids' stuff at home — all it takes is one distracted second in a hotel room and something's gone missing under a bed or buried at the bottom of a beach bag. Once we started keeping a tracker on his keys and his wallet, checkout morning stopped being a scavenger hunt. Instead of turning the whole room upside down while he insists he "just had them," I pull up the app and tell him exactly where to look, and I get to keep my peace of mind instead.

Pro tip: placing one on your remote will mean you never have to wander your house wondering where on earth you or the kids placed the remote

His & Hers

We each ended up needing our own pair of noise cancelling headphones, but for completely different reasons. Mine are about blocking everything else out — the hallway noise, the ice machine, whoever's still awake in the next bed — so I can actually fall asleep instead of lying there listening to a strange room. His are about being able to watch something on his phone in bed without us arguing over the TV remote or me needing total quiet while he's still scrolling. Same headphones, two totally different jobs.

Winding Down

The Kindle earns its spot for one very specific reason: no bright phone screen glowing next to my husband while he's trying to sleep, and no temptation for me to "just check something real quick" and end up scrolling for forty minutes instead of actually reading a chapter. And the noise machine is the thing that makes an unfamiliar room feel like ours — the same background hum every single night, so neither of us is lying there cataloging every sound in the hallway.

It's never the big stuff that ruins a couples trip — it's the small logistics nobody plans for. Fix those and you actually get to enjoy each other, which was the whole point of going away in the first place. Grab the printable so you remember all of it before you're standing in the hotel room at 6 a.m. fighting over an outlet.

Below is the full packing list, broken down by category so you can work through it section by section, or just skim for whatever you're missing. Wherever I've got a product I actually use and recommend, the item is clickable and will take you straight to my pick on Amazon — I'm still adding links as I go, so not everything is linked yet.

A note on how this one's laid out: a few categories are split into his and hers simply because the products differ — silicone rings, rash guards, sun hats, that kind of thing. Take whatever applies to the two of you and ignore the rest. This isn't a his-column-hers-column situation, it's just easier than listing everything twice.

One thing I want to say up front: you do not need to pack every single item on this list. Nobody does. Think of this as a helpful starting point, not a mandate. Pull from it based on the kind of trip you're actually taking. If you're headed somewhere all-inclusive where you'll live in swimsuits, skip half the going-out clothes. If there's no nice dinner on the itinerary, skip the date night outfit. If you're road-tripping instead of flying, the whole airport section is irrelevant to you. This is here to make the "what do we even need" spiral easier, not to give you one more thing you have to fully check off.

And if you'd rather have this whole thing as a printable to check off by hand, grab your free copy below before you dive in.

Made it through the whole list?

Grab the printable version so you're not scrolling back through this post every time you pack. One page, free, ready to check off by hand.

That's the whole list. Again — take what's useful, leave the rest. Half of packing for two people is just not duplicating things: one toiletry bag, one first aid kit, one set of chargers you both pull from. Divide it up before you start, not while you're standing over an open suitcase the night before.

And if you forget something, there's a store. Nobody's trip has ever been ruined by a missing pair of socks.

Before you go...

Don't forget your free printable copy of this checklist — perfect for taping inside your suitcase lid so you've always got it on hand.

If there's one thing you'll learn about me, it's that I love finding things that make life feel a little easier. Whether that's a travel essential, a parenting hack, a cozy self-care find, or something that simply makes me think, "Why didn't I know about this sooner?"

I'm grateful you're here and I hope you found something helpful. Wishing you comfort, calm, and a little less overwhelm wherever life takes you.
