What I NEVER Pack in My Carry-On for Stress-Free Travel Days

I used to be a "just in case" packer.
If there was a 2% chance I might need it, it was going in the bag.
Extra chargers I didn't need. A backup outfit for an outfit change that was never happening. Three different snack options because what if the kids didn't like the first one.
Somewhere around our third or fourth trip, I finally admitted the truth: over-packing wasn't making me feel more prepared. It was making me more stressed. More to dig through at security. More to lose track of. More weight on my shoulder by hour four of travel day, while I'm sweating through an airport hallway convinced I've forgotten something even though I clearly haven't, because I checked the bag four times.

So this is the other side of my usual packing lists. Not what I pack — what I've finally stopped packing, and what actually earned a permanent spot in my carry-on instead.
1. The INIU 45W Portable Charger (Instead of a Tangle of Cords)
For years my carry-on had a graveyard of cords floating around the bottom.
Half of them for devices I wasn't even bringing.
I don't know why I kept a charger for a phone I upgraded two years ago, but there it was, riding along on every trip like emotional support cable.
Now I keep it simple: one small, fast-charging power bank that can top up my phone and the kids' tablets without me hunting for an outlet in a packed gate area with a toddler attached to my leg.
Why I Love It
✔ Fully charges a phone in about 30 minutes
✔ Small enough to disappear into a bag pocket
✔ Detachable, replaceable cable — one frayed wire doesn't end it
✔ TSA-approved and flight-safe
✔ One item instead of a tangle of three
Real Travel Note: I have genuinely dug through my entire bag at a gate, panicking about my phone dying with boarding passes on it, only to remember the charger was in the exact zipper pocket labeled "chargers." ADHD brain doesn't read labels apparently.
2. The Comfrt Airplane Mode Travel Hoodie (Instead of a Bulky Neck Pillow)
I used to bring one of those giant memory foam neck pillows.

The kind that never actually deflated back down small, no matter how hard I sat on my suitcase trying to zip it.
Now my go-to is a travel hoodie that already has a built-in contoured eye mask sewn into the hood. So I get blackout comfort without an extra item taking up space — and without looking like I'm about to rob the plane, which, fair, the hood-and-mask combo is a whole look.

It genuinely changed how I sleep on red-eyes and early flights.
Why I Love It
✔ Built-in eye mask blocks light for real sleep
✔ Zip sleeve pockets keep passports and boarding passes within reach
✔ Hidden kangaroo pockets for earbuds & required snacks
✔ Oversized hood for total comfort wherever you land
✔ One item replaces a pillow, a mask, and a hoodie
Real Travel Note: My husband asked me once mid-flight if I was "doing okay under there." I was. I was doing great under there. Best sleep of the
trip.

3. The Soundcore Life Q30 Headphones and Loop Switch 2 Earplugs (Instead of Cheap Earbuds)
Cheap earbuds that let every crying baby and engine hum straight through were a fast way to arrive already overstimulated.
As someone who is, let's say, sensory-sensitive on a good day and a full live wire on a travel day, that was not sustainable.
I switched to the Soundcore Life Q30 headphones with real active noise cancelling for long flights, and I keep a set of Loop Switch 2 earplugs on hand too, for shorter trips or when I want something smaller in my bag that doesn't make me look like I'm about to record a podcast in seat 14C.
Why I Love It
✔ Real active noise cancelling, not just noise dampening
✔ Multiple listening modes for flights, work, or sleep
✔ Loop earplugs are tiny and still take the edge off cabin noise
✔ Comfortable enough for a full long-haul flight
✔ Genuinely changes how overstimulated I feel by landing
4. The Owala 24 oz Sip Water Bottle (Instead of a Bottle I Never Actually Drink From)
As a therapist, I talk about hydration constantly.
It's tied to mood, focus, energy. All of it.
So a flimsy bottle that leaks in my bag or doesn't fit my cup holder just doesn't make it into the carry-on anymore. Mine goes in a side pocket, gets filled the second I clear security, and stays in reach the whole flight.
Why I Love It
✔ Fits every cup holder and bag pocket I own
✔ Keeps drinks cold for hours
✔ Easy to drink from on the go without spilling
✔ Encourages me to actually refill it, not just carry it
✔ Proximity equals consistency
Real Travel Note: I will absolutely be that person filling up at the little water station right before boarding while everyone behind me sighs. Hydrated and slightly in the way. That's the brand.
5. The Clever Fox Undated Planner (Instead of Trusting My Own Brain)
This one isn't a physical item you'd expect on a "what's in my carry-on" list. But it's just as real for me.
My brain does not hold onto travel logistics well once there's chaos happening around me. Gate changes. Kids needing something. Boarding announcements. All of it competing for the same three brain cells.
So a small undated planner goes in my bag every trip. I write down confirmation numbers, the game plan for the day, anything I don't want to be relying on working memory for while I'm distracted by literally anything shiny.
Why I Love It
✔ Undated layout — start it any trip, no wasted pages
✔ Small enough to fit inside a bag (5.8" x 8.3")
✔ Gives my ADHD brain an external place to hold logistics
✔ One less thing I'm trying to remember mid-chaos
✔ Comes with a quick-start guide and stickers, and yes, I use the stickers, no I'm not embarrassed
The Bigger Lesson
None of this is about minimalism for the sake of it.
It's about being honest with myself about what I actually reach for on a travel day versus what just sounded responsible to pack.
Every item that earns a spot in my carry-on now has to pull its weight. Literally and mentally.
Everything else stays home. Right where it can be someone else's "just in case."

If there's one thing you'll learn about me, it's that I love finding things that make life feel a little easier.
Whether that's a travel essential, a parenting hack, a cozy self-care find, or something that simply makes me think, "Why didn't I know about this sooner?"
I'm grateful you're here and I hope you found something helpful.
Wishing you comfort, calm, and a little less overwhelm wherever life takes you.
