The Kids' Travel Kit That Actually Buys Me Quiet Hours on Long Flights
Last October was the first time my kids had ever actually been on a plane. My oldest was 16, middle was five, and son was three, and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. We're going back again this October, kids a year older, and this time I actually know what buys me quiet hours instead of a meltdown. Spoiler: it's not luck.
My son does not like things touching his face — no masks, nothing on his cheeks, full stop. Middle child, on the other hand, will let you paint her whole face like a tiger and thank you for it.
So whatever I pack has to work for both of them, which is honestly the whole challenge of parenting two very different small humans in one row of airplane seats.
The magnetic games were the real surprise hit. Turbulence, tray tables, a toddler's elbow — pieces are going flying no matter what you do, but at least with these they stick back down instead of rolling under someone's seat three rows up.
Same with the little building tiles. Individually boxed, contained, and quiet, which is really all I'm asking for at 30,000 feet.
Ear pressure was a whole thing on that first flight. I'd been giving the kids sugar-free lollipops to help, which work wonders but sometimes it's nice to have a back up or honestly double up if they happen to have a cold or somethign that can just make the congestion that much worse (not like kids get colds or access germs though....)
The kid-sized pressure-regulating ear plugs solved it!
And because my kids are messy all day, every day, the travel tray has genuinely saved my sanity — markers stay put, snacks stay contained, and I'm not chasing a Goldfish cracker across the aisle mid-flight.
Add a soft packable blanket so they stay cozy without overheating, and a hoodie just like mine, kid-sized, so we can actually match on travel days, and that's the whole kit.
Quiet Hands, Busy Brains
♡ Magnetic travel board games — these are the ones that started it all last October, since the magnets mean the pieces stick back down instead of skittering under the seat in front of us the second we hit turbulence.
♡ Sensory push-peel activity board — completely screen-free and silent, just silicone strings the kids can push, peel, and loop for as long as they need to. It's the kind of thing occupational therapists actually
recommend for sensory regulation, and in a confined plane seat with an easily overstimulated three-year-old, that quiet, no-mess calm-down option has genuinely earned its spot in the bag.
♡ Mini magnetic building tiles — individually boxed so nothing spills into a loose pile of pieces, and quiet enough that I don't feel like we're bothering the row behind us.
Comfort & Sleep
♡ Packable travel blanket — packs down small but keeps them cozy without overheating, which matters more than I expected once we're stuck in that recycled airplane air for five hours straight.
♡ Kids' pressure-regulating ear plugs — this is what finally solved the ear pressure problem. Now I have both the sugar-free lollipops and the ear plugs to use as my sore ear air plane defense system

♡ Kids' lightweight travel hoodie — the kid-sized version of the one I wear, so we actually match on travel days, and it's soft enough that even Owen, who won't tolerate anything touching his face, never once complains about it.
Keeping Things Contained
♡ Kids' travel tray — markers stay put, snacks stay contained, and I've stopped chasing a Goldfish cracker across the aisle mid-flight.

♡ Polarized kids' sunglasses, 3-pack — once we land, the glare off the water and sand is no joke for little eyes, and between my daughter sitting on hers and my son losing his within a day of arriving, a 3-pack means I'm not scrambling to replace a $20 pair every single time we turn around.
If you want to start a healthy routine before you leave on a trip - these vitamins are a game changer for us! And with 35% off your first order - its a no brainer too!
None of this guarantees a perfectly quiet flight — nothing does, and if anyone tells you otherwise they're selling something.
But it buys me stretches of actual quiet, and on a five-hour flight with two kids, I'll take every minute I can get. Grab the printable so you remember all of it before you're standing in the airport realizing you forgot the ear plugs.
Below is the full packing list, broken down by category so you can work through it section by section, or just skim for whatever you're missing. Wherever I've got a product I actually use and recommend, the item is clickable and will take you straight to my pick on Amazon — I'm still adding links as I go, so not everything is linked yet.
One thing I want to say up front: you do not need to pack every single item on this list. Nobody does. Think of this as a helpful starting point, not a mandate. Pull from it based on what actually makes sense for your family's life stage. If your kids are older, skip the swim vests and the airplane bed. If there's no pool where you're headed, skip the floaties. This is here to make the "what the heck do I even pack" spiral easier, not to give you one more thing you have to fully check off.
And if you'd rather have this whole thing as a printable to check off by hand, grab your free copy below before you dive in.

If there's one thing you'll learn about me, it's that I love finding things that make life feel a little easier. Whether that's a travel essential, a parenting hack, a cozy self-care find, or something that simply makes me think, "Why didn't I know about this sooner?", I'm grateful you're here and I hope you found something helpful. Wishing you comfort, calm, and a little less overwhelm wherever life takes you. Ashley
