The "Rocky" Beach That Turned Out to Be a Coral Reef (And Why We Went Back, Just the Two of Us)

Last October we took the whole family to the Dominican and paid extra to upgrade into the "VIP" section of beach — picturing something out of the brochure, soft sand, clear water, the whole postcard. What we actually waded into was rocky enough that I spent the first ten minutes doing an ungraceful hop across it, half-convinced we'd somehow ended up on the wrong stretch.
So for most of the week, we just avoided that part of the water entirely. The snorkel masks sat zipped in our bag the whole time — packed with good intentions, used exactly never — until our last afternoon there, when we finally thought, we can't leave without at least trying. We waded back in, put them on, and that "rocky" water turned out to be a full reef. Coral, fish, the works, right there the whole trip. We'd almost missed it completely.
That last-day discovery is the whole reason our April trip went so differently. This time it was just my husband and me, and instead of the masks sitting packed and untouched until day six, they were the first thing in the suitcase. We spent hours out there, floating over that same reef, actually taking the time to explore it instead of defaulting to the lounge chairs like we might have before. If we hadn't tried those masks on a whim in October, we never would've known what was waiting for us to come back for.
The masks are the whole reason that trip turned into one of my favorite couples getaways yet: no fighting a mouthpiece, no salt water in your eyes, just a clear wide view the second your face hits the water. We also had a waterproof phone case with us — worth it just for the handful of underwater photos we got of each other, goofy and grinning, that are still our phone backgrounds months later.

In the Water
Here's the thing about "rocky" beaches — my feet do not forgive quickly, and by the end of that October week I'd done more awkward baby-step shuffles across that reef than I can count. So before we flew out in April, water shoes went straight in my suitcase, no debate. There's no version of "just the two of us" exploring a reef that includes me hobbling across coral like it personally wronged me.
And this one's a little sentimental, but: neither of us takes our real rings into the ocean anymore. Too many stories of wedding bands sliding off in the surf and gone for good. So it was a silicone ring for me and a silicone ring for him in April — still married, just not risking the real ones in open water.
That trip, once we'd worn ourselves out swimming over the reef, we spent the rest of our afternoons just floating next to each other on a pool float hammock, not talking about much of anything. That's the version of the trip I actually wanted — the one October almost didn't let us have.
Sun & Skin
We were out on the water for so many hours that week that we both came back a little sunburnt and annoyed with ourselves for not reapplying more often. Aloe after-sun spray
got us through the flight home without wincing every time we leaned back in the seat.
And the glare off the water when you're just sitting there, side by side, not doing anything in particular — that's when I actually reach for polarized sunglasses.
Cuts the shine enough that you can actually watch the water instead of squinting at it.
On the Sand
We learned the hard way in October that sharing one towel because the other one blew off down the beach is not relaxing for anybody. So for April: a sand-free beach towel for each of us, and towel clips
so neither one goes anywhere while we're busy ignoring everything but each other.

One thing I want to say up front: you do not need to pack every single item on this list. Nobody does. Think of this as a helpful starting point, not a mandate. Pull from it based on the kind of trip you're actually taking. If you're headed somewhere all-inclusive where you'll live in swimsuits, skip half the going-out clothes. If there's no nice dinner on the itinerary, skip the date night outfit. If you're road-tripping instead of flying, the whole airport section is irrelevant to you. This is here to make the "what do we even need" spiral easier, not to give you one more thing you have to fully check off.
