The Ultimate Family Beach Packing List

I used to be really good at packing. Genuinely. I moved my entire life overseas once, more than one suitcase at a time, and could eyeball a bag's weight before it ever touched a scale. I was basically a packing savant.
Then I had kids. Then I had more kids. Somewhere between then and packing for a family of five, three different bedtimes, one kid who needs a sound machine, another who needs a night light, and snacks for everyone because someone is guaranteed to melt down over hunger somewhere over the ocean, I lost that skill completely. I've built an actual checklist out of the chaos since then (it's below, promise), but before we get there, I wanted to share some of the trips and mistakes that built it.
We've been going back to the same resort in Punta Cana for a few years now, and the staff know my kids by name at this point. That kind of familiarity doesn't happen by accident. It happens because we keep going back to what works, trip after trip, more than one "wait, did we forget the sunscreen" scramble along the way.
If any of that sounds familiar, keep reading. Here are a few of the things that earned a permanent spot in our suitcases, and the real moments that got them there.

Clothing — Comfy Travel Outfit

I saw the Comfrt travel hoodie in a random TikTok ad and almost scrolled right past it, because how many "life-changing" travel products can actually be real? But something about the pockets got me. There's one sized exactly for a passport, a kangaroo pocket built for AirPods, and a slight compression through the body that genuinely feels like being hugged for an entire flight. I've worn mine through more trips than I can count now, washed it probably fifteen or twenty times, and it still looks brand new.
The one honest thing I'll say is that I run hot on planes, and the original hoodie can trap heat if I'm not careful. So for our trip this October I'm actually switching to the zip version, so I can vent it open the second I need to, kind of like unzipping your leg out from under a blanket without fully committing to being cold.
Footwear — Water Shoes

For three trips to the same resort, we assumed our little "VIP beach" section was just rocky and kind of annoying to walk into the water on. Then on the last day of our most recent trip, someone finally grabbed a snorkel mask and looked down, and it turned out that whole "rocky" stretch was actually a coral reef, completely full of fish. My older two spent the rest of that day snorkeling until their hearts were content, and I stood there half thrilled and half annoyed we hadn't figured this out three trips ago.
Walking over coral and reef rock barefoot is genuinely rough on feet, kids and adults both, and it's the kind of thing that can end a beach day fast if someone gets a cut. Water shoes go on the packing list now without question, every single trip.
Health, Safety & First Aid — Anti-Chafe Balm
Nobody warns you about chafing before a beach trip. Then you're three days in, it's ninety degrees, you've been in a wet swimsuit half the day, and suddenly walking normally hurts. I dealt with it for way too many trips before I actually did something about it, mostly around my thighs and where my sandal straps rub against my ankles by the end of a long beach day.

Body Glide has genuinely fixed that for me. It goes on before we even leave for the beach, and I don't think about chafing again for the rest of the trip, which feels like a small miracle after past trips spent wincing every time I walked.
Hydration, Snacks & Wellness — Adult Tumbler
As a therapist, I ask clients about hydration more than you'd think, and I can't tell you how many times someone tells me they have a water bottle, and then when I ask where it actually is, they have no idea. I say that as someone who used to be exactly that person on vacation too: drink half a bottle, set it down somewhere, lose track of it in the sun, repeat.

My Owala tumbler fixed that for me in a weirdly specific way. It keeps drinks cold enough that I actually want to keep drinking from it. I can get a piña colada at ten in the morning and, if I'm pacing myself right, I'm still sipping the same one at three in the afternoon, no watered-down mess, no giving up halfway through because it went warm. It's become the one thing I genuinely never travel without.
Beach & Swim Gear — Waterproof Phone Case
I keep a microfiber cloth in a Ziploc bag in my beach bag at all times now, because I learned the hard way that sunscreen residue on the outside of your phone case turns every photo for the rest of the day slightly blurry, and you don't notice until you're back home scrolling

through your camera roll wondering why every beach shot looks foggy.
The waterproof case itself has become more than just phone protection, honestly. I stash a bit of cash inside it too, so if I want to tip someone at the pool or grab a drink without hauling a bag down to the water, I've got it right there. It's turned into one of those small things that ends up making a bigger difference than I expected.
Tech, Charging & Entertainment — Tripod/Selfie Stick
I am, without fail, the one taking the photo on every single trip, which means I have years of pictures of my family and almost none of me actually in them. It's such a small thing until you realize you're the only person in your own memories who's missing from the picture.

A tripod and a little remote fixed that more than I expected it to. Now I can actually set the shot up, hand nobody the phone, and step into the frame myself. The only real tip I'll give you is to pack spare batteries for the remote, because that's the one thing I always, always forget, usually right when we've found the perfect spot.
Sleep, Comfort, Packing & Laundry — Luggage Scale
I used to be genuinely good at this. I moved my entire life overseas at one point, more than one suitcase at a time, and could eyeball a bag's weight before it ever got near an airport scale. It was one of those weirdly specific skills I was proud of.

Somewhere between then and now, packing for our family of five, plus gifts and souvenirs for everyone back home, I lost that ability completely. A luggage scale takes the guesswork out before you're standing at check-in repacking in front of a line of strangers while everyone behind you sighs. I use mine every single trip now, no exceptions.

Below is the full packing list, broken down by category so you can work through it section by section, or just skim for whatever you're missing. Wherever I've got a product I actually use and recommend, the item is clickable and will take you straight to my pick on Amazon — I'm still adding links as I go, so not everything is linked yet.
One thing I want to say up front: you do not need to pack every single item on this list. Nobody does. Think of this as a helpful starting point, not a mandate. Pull from it based on what actually makes sense for your family's life stage. If your kids are older, skip the swim vests and the airplane bed. If there's no pool where you're headed, skip the floaties. This is here to make the "what the heck do I even pack" spiral easier, not to give you one more thing you have to fully check off.
And if you'd rather have this whole thing as a printable to check off by hand, grab your free copy below before you dive in.

At the end of the day, none of this is really about the list. It's about getting out the door with a little less stress, so the trip itself can actually feel like a trip and not just a logistics project.
Because the part that actually matters is everything that happens after the packing is done — sandy toes, sunburned noses, someone begging for five more minutes in the water, the photo you didn't plan to take that ends up being your favorite one.
However much of this list you actually use, and however this trip goes, I hope it gives your family exactly what you're hoping for.

If there's one thing you'll learn about me, it's that I love finding things that make life feel a little easier. Whether that's a travel essential, a parenting hack, a cozy self-care find, or something that simply makes me think, "Why didn't I know about this sooner?"
I'm grateful you're here and I hope you found something helpful. Wishing you comfort, calm, and a little less overwhelm wherever life takes you.
