What's Actually in My Family Beach Bag

Everyone always asks what's actually in my beach bag, not the whole suitcase, just the one bag that comes down to the water with us every single day of the trip. So here it is, item by item, no filler.

I went through a few beach bags before landing on the one I actually use now, mostly canvas totes that looked cute in a store and then soaked through the second they touched wet sand or a dripping swimsuit. The

one I use now has a built-in insulated pocket, which sounds like a small thing until you realize it means the drinks stay cold and the sunscreen doesn't turn into a warm puddle by noon.

Same one from my packing list, and it earns its spot here too. It's the one thing that survives the whole day in a beach bag without leaking all over everything else in there, which after a few ruined phone chargers and soggy sunscreen tubes, is not a small ask.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen, plural

I pack two kinds on purpose. A mineral lotion, since it's reef-safe and gentler on skin, and a sport spray for the moments we need something faster than rubbing lotion into two squirming kids one at a time. Mineral sunscreen tends to run more expensive, so for a family of five, I do a mix of both rather than buying the pricier one for everyone.

Phone Case The waterproof phone case

I already told the story of learning this one the hard way, sunscreen residue on the outside of a case turns every beach photo slightly blurry, and you don't notice until you're home scrolling through pictures wondering what happened. This one lives in the beach bag permanently now, and I keep a bit of cash tucked inside it too.

Goggles Goggles, for the kid who actually wants her whole face underwater

One of mine could genuinely spend an entire beach day face-down in the water if we let her, which means real swim goggles are non-negotiable, not the dollar-store kind that fog up and leak by the second dunk.

The sand toys are honestly less about me and more about buying myself fifteen quiet minutes to actually finish a chapter of a book. Worth every penny.

Rash Guard

A rash guard for the kid who burns anyway

Even with sunscreen reapplied on schedule, one of my kids still burns faster than the rest of us, so a long-sleeve rash guard just goes on before we even leave the room some days. Less sunscreen to reapply, less chance of an end-of-day meltdown over a sunburned shoulder.

One thing I want to say up front: you do not need to pack every single item on this list. Nobody does. Think of this as a helpful starting point, not a mandate. Pull from it based on what actually makes sense for your family's life stage. If your kids are older, skip the swim vests and the airplane bed. At the end of the day, none of this is really about the list. It's about getting out the door with a little less stress, so the trip itself can actually feel like a trip and not just a logistics project.
