I used to think carry-ons were just for the basics.
A phone charger.
A snack.
Maybe a book.
Then life humbled me.
After enough delayed flights, missed connections, airport waits, forgotten chargers, uncomfortable seats, and mysteriously disappearing water bottles, I realized my carry-on wasn't just a bag.
It was a survival kit.
These days, I pack my carry-on a little differently.
As a therapist, I've learned that when we're tired, hungry, overstimulated, uncomfortable, or disorganized, everything feels harder.
As someone with ADHD, I've also learned that a little preparation goes a long way toward preventing unnecessary stress.
These are the items I personally keep in my carry-on to help travel days feel calmer, easier, and a lot less chaotic.
1. My Travel Hoodie
If you've read any of my other travel posts, you probably saw this one coming.
This hoodie has become my security blanket in clothing form.

Airports are unpredictable.
Planes are unpredictable.
The temperature seems to change every twenty minutes.
One moment I'm perfectly comfortable.
The next I'm debating whether I've accidentally boarded a flight to Antarctica.
I love that this hoodie combines comfort with practical features.
The hidden eye mask makes it easier to rest on flights.
The weighted feel is surprisingly grounding.
And the pockets help me keep important items where they're supposed to be.
Which means fewer frantic searches for my passport.
Why I love it:
Hidden eye mask built into the hood
Cozy weighted feel
Dedicated passport pocket
Multiple secure storage compartments
Available in pullover and zip-up styles
Perfect for flights and layovers
2. My Owala Water Bottle
Travel days and hydration don't always get along.
Somehow I can spend hours in an airport and realize I've had two coffees and approximately four sips of water.
Not ideal.
I've learned that when I'm dehydrated, everything feels harder.
I get tired faster.
I get headaches more easily.
And my patience drops dramatically.

The Owala has become one of my favorite travel companions because it's leakproof, easy to carry, and encourages me to actually drink water.
Which sounds simple.
But apparently I need all the help I can get.
Why I love it:
Leakproof design
Easy to drink from while traveling
Fits in most bags and cup holders
Encourages hydration throughout the day
Makes healthy habits easier
3. Noise-Cancelling Headphones
There are days when airports feel exciting.
There are other days when every sound feels approximately 30% louder than it should. The headphones come out on those days.
I love being able to create a little bubble of calm in a busy environment.
Whether I'm listening to music, an audiobook, a podcast, or absolutely nothing at all, the noise cancellation helps reduce some of the sensory overload that can come with travel.
Why I love them:
Comfortable for long wear
Effective noise cancellation
Great battery life
Helps reduce overstimulation
Makes travel feel calmer
4. My Kindle
I always travel with something to read.
Always.
Whether I actually finish a book is another conversation entirely.
The Kindle lets me bring dozens of books without sacrificing luggage space.
It's perfect for flights, airport waits, pool days, and those moments when I want to disconnect from scrolling for a little while.
Why I love it:
Holds thousands of books
Lightweight and compact
Great for flights and vacations
Saves suitcase space
Lets me choose books based on my mood
5. My Portable Charger
There are few travel moments more stressful than seeing your phone battery sitting at 4%. Especially when your boarding pass, hotel reservation, maps, and travel plans all live on that phone.
A portable charger is one of those items I hope I won't need.
And somehow end up using every trip.
Why I love it:
Keeps devices charged throughout travel days
Perfect for airports and layovers
Compact and easy to carry
Helps avoid travel-related panic
Gives me peace of mind
6. My Luggage Tracker
Full disclosure: the photo below is actually one of our trackers attached to my child's watch. One thing you'll quickly learn about me is that I rarely use products for only one purpose.
The exact same tracker that helps me keep tabs on my kids also gets tossed into luggage, backpacks, carry-ons, and pretty much anything I don't want disappearing while traveling.

Maybe it's the ADHD.
Maybe it's anxiety.
Maybe it's experience.
Whatever the reason, I like knowing where my luggage is.
If my suitcase decides to take a different route than I do, I'd prefer to know about it.
Being able to quickly check the location of my luggage gives me a surprising amount of peace of mind.
Why I Love It
✔ Helps keep track of luggage and bags
✔ Easy setup with iPhone
✔ Alerts me if something gets left behind
✔ Helps reduce travel stress
✔ Gives me peace of mind
✔ Works for luggage, backpacks, carry-ons, and kids' belongings
Real Travel Note
I've used these in suitcases, backpacks, diaper bags, carry-ons, and even attached to my kids' belongings while traveling.
The photo shows one attached to my child's watch because that's how we were using it on our last trip.
For me, it's less about tracking a specific item and more about knowing that if something important gets separated from us, I have a much better chance of finding it.
7. My Sound Machine

This one surprises people.
But it's one of the first things I pack.
I don't sleep well in complete silence.
And I definitely don't sleep well when every unfamiliar noise in a hotel room is demanding my attention.
A portable sound machine helps create a familiar sleep environment wherever I am. And good sleep makes every part of travel easier.
Why I love it:
Creates familiar background noise
Helps me sleep in unfamiliar places
Masks hallway and hotel noise
Compact and easy to pack
Helps me wake up feeling more rested
Final Thoughts
Over the years, I've learned that travel days become much easier when I stop trying to "wing it."
A little preparation goes a long way.
These aren't necessarily the most exciting things in my carry-on.
But they're the items that help me stay comfortable, hydrated, organized, rested, and a little less overwhelmed.
And for me, that's worth every inch of carry-on space.

If there's one thing you'll learn about me, it's that I love finding things that make life feel a little easier.
Whether that's a travel essential, a parenting hack, a cozy self-care find, or something that simply makes me think, "Why didn't I know about this sooner?"
I'm grateful you're here and I hope you found something helpful.
Wishing you comfort, calm, and a little less overwhelm wherever life takes you.
