Why I Switched to a Menstrual Disc (And What I Wish I'd Known Sooner)

I genuinely wonder sometimes where menstrual cups and discs were my entire life. Whether it's a cup or a disc, medical-grade silicone period products have completely changed how I think about my period — but I'll be honest that the right one depends a lot on your body, your age, and whether you've had kids, because that really does change things.

Before I had kids, I used a cup and loved it. After my daughter, I could still use both a cup and my Nixit disc without issue. After my son, I noticed some real pelvic floor changes — more leakage, less capacity, a genuine learning curve both literally and figuratively. Kegels help, and it's something I still need to work on, but it was a good reminder that what worked for your body before pregnancy might need an adjustment period after.

Why I Landed on Nixit

The Nixit Menstrual Disc — What sold me on the disc over a cup was comfort and wear time — you can wear it up to 12 hours, compared to about 8 for a tampon, and there's no suction or folding it has to conform to. It's also mess-free enough that, in a pinch, I've rinsed it out using my Tushy bidet on a low stream instead of doing the awkward sink walk — if you want the full story on that little life hack, I wrote about it in my Tushy 3.0 review.

The Underwear That Backs It Up

I wear Knix underwear constantly, disc or no disc, because of the ridiculous absorbency — some styles hold up to six-nine tampons' worth. I keep both styles in rotation: Knix Super Leakproof High Rise for the days I want full coverage, and Knix Super Leakproof Bikini for when I just want something that feels like regular underwear. As a mom of two who's solidly in perimenopause territory, that's not just about periods. It's peace of mind for the days I cough, laugh, or sneeze a little too hard. They've also started making versions for teens, which has me thinking ahead to my daughter's first period.

My mom and I have already talked about how different this is going to be for my daughter compared to what we grew up with. Instead of bulky pads, she'll have the option of comfortable, breathable underwear that just absorbs, so if her period starts at school, she's covered without the panic. It's a genuinely different, better starting point than tampons and pads were for us, and I'm glad she'll get to have it.

If you've been curious about switching from tampons or pads to a disc, my honest take is: give it a full cycle before you judge it. There's a learning curve, but once it clicks, it's hard to imagine going back. Shop my favourite period savers!

If there's one thing you'll learn about me, it's that I love finding things that make life feel a little easier. Whether that's a travel essential, a parenting hack, a cozy self-care find, or something that simply makes me think, "Why didn't I know about this sooner?"

I'm grateful you're here and I hope you found something helpful. Wishing you comfort, calm, and a little less overwhelm wherever life takes you.
