On our first full day in Cuba, I was not diligent about reapplying sunscreen. My swimsuit top shifted a little in the water, and by the time we got out I had a bright, blistering strip of a burn right along my neckline — the one spot I'd missed. My husband got burnt too. We spent the rest of that afternoon wincing every time a shirt touched our shoulders, both of us thinking some version of "well, that was avoidable."

The thing that saved the rest of the trip was almost an afterthought: I'd packed rash guards for both of us “just in case,” not really expecting to need them. We wore them all day for the next two days... to give our skin a break— still got to swim, still got to float around doing nothing, just covered up and actually comfortable instead of counting down the minutes until we could get out of the sun.

That trip is basically the whole reason this list exists. Between that sunburn, the “rocky” beach that turned out to be a coral reef we almost skipped, the pool float my husband teased me for packing (and then borrowed constantly), and my own little self-care kit that keeps me from coming home more depleted than when I left — I've slowly built a real system for what earns a permanent spot in our bags on a couples trip. Not the kids' stuff, not the fifteen just-in-case extras for a toddler. Just the things that make a trip together actually feel like a trip together.

So here it is, the whole thing in one place: everything from sun care to the hotel room to keeping our phones alive long enough to actually be present with each other. Pull from whatever sections apply to your trip — you don't need all of it, but I promise you'll be glad you packed more of it than you think.

Sun, Sand & Water

This section is basically the post-Cuba redemption list — the stuff that would have actually prevented that neckline burn instead of leaving me to deal with it after the fact.

The aloe spray is what I reach for now the second I even suspect I've caught too much

sun, which is not the same as reapplying in the first place, but it's what I've got for damage control. The sunglasses are non-negotiable for both of us — neither Steve nor I can handle glare off open water for more than a few minutes without squinting our way into a headache.

The pool float hammock is the one my husband teased me for packing and then never wanted to get out of himself. The silicone rings go on

before our real wedding bands ever get near saltwater or a hot pool deck

— a cheap swap so nothing that actually matters gets scratched up, lost, or stuck on a finger that's swollen from the heat. And after we almost skipped that “rocky” beach in Cuba that turned out to be a coral reef, we don't get in the water anywhere near reef or rock without the snorkel mask now.

Water shoes are the other half of that reef lesson — sharp coral and hot sand aren't places you want bare feet. The sand-free towel and the clips are smaller stuff, but they're the difference between actually relaxing on a lounge chair and spending half the afternoon chasing a towel down the beach or shaking sand out of everything before we get in the car.

Self-Care & Relaxation

This is genuinely the section that keeps me from coming home more wiped out than when I left. I run warm and sweat through pretty much any kind of heat, so on vacation I need about two minutes of actual ritual a day — not a whole routine, just the basics — or I show up to day three of the trip feeling gross instead of rested.

The face mask is about as low-effort as self-care gets — I put it on before bed and let it do

the work while I sleep, which is about all I have left in me by evening on a trip. The lip balm has SPF built in because my lips burn and crack just as fast as my shoulders do in that kind of sun, and after Cuba I'd rather not learn that lesson twice.

Heat, humidity, and hours of walking is a guaranteed chafe recipe for me, so the balm goes on before we head out for the day, not after it's already a problem. Steve's hands crack from sun and salt water even faster than

mine do, so the hand cream is in the bag as much for him as it is for me.

Small thing, but showing up to dinner with decent-looking nails after a full day at the beach is exactly the kind of two-minute ritual that makes me feel like myself again instead of someone who's been in salt water since 9am. Shop my Travel manicure & grooming kit

In the Room

A word on the sound machine: I genuinely cannot sleep without one at home, so of course a hotel room with a hallway that never quiets down and an ice machine that runs all night was never going to work for me without it. It's a small thing to pack, and it's the difference between actually resting and lying there wide awake next to my husband, annoyed at every sound in the building.

Packing & On the Go

This is the section that's saved more than one argument about whose stuff is where. When two people are living out of the same set of bags for a week, a little bit of system goes a long way.

Packing cubes

Packing cubes mean Steve's stuff and my stuff actually stay separated instead of turning into one tangled pile by day two of the trip. The luggage scale keeps us from finding out we're overweight right at the check-in counter, which has absolutely happened to us before.

The duffel folds flat inside the suitcase on the way there and comes home full of whatever we picked up along the way. The vacuum-seal bags are how bulkier stuff like our rash guards actually fits without eating up all the space we need for everything else.

Tech & Staying Connected

On a Dominican trip a few years back, we found a resort with a kids' club and used it for just two or three afternoons — not the whole week, just enough to actually get some real couples time in without any guilt about it. That's honestly the spirit behind half of this list.

Pack the things that let the two of you actually be present with each other, whether that's a fully charged phone so you're not stressed about connectivity, a book you can lose yourself in by the pool, or literally just a decent night's sleep.

Below is the full packing list, broken down by category so you can work through it section by section, or just skim for whatever you're missing. Wherever I've got a product I actually use and recommend, the item is clickable and will take you straight to my pick on Amazon — I'm still adding links as I go, so not everything is linked yet.

A note on how this one's laid out: a few categories are split into his and hers simply because the products differ — silicone rings, rash guards, sun hats, that kind of thing. Take whatever applies to the two of you and ignore the rest. This isn't a his-column-hers-column situation, it's just easier than listing everything twice.

One thing I want to say up front: you do not need to pack every single item on this list. Nobody does. Think of this as a helpful starting point, not a mandate. Pull from it based on the kind of trip you're actually taking. If you're headed somewhere all-inclusive where you'll live in swimsuits, skip half the going-out clothes. If there's no nice dinner on the itinerary, skip the date night outfit. If you're road-tripping instead of flying, the whole airport section is irrelevant to you. This is here to make the "what do we even need" spiral easier, not to give you one more thing you have to fully check off.

That's the whole list. Again — take what's useful, leave the rest. Half of packing for two people is just not duplicating things: one toiletry bag, one first aid kit, one set of chargers you both pull from. Divide it up before you start, not while you're standing over an open suitcase the night before.

And if you forget something, there's a store. Nobody's trip has ever been ruined by a missing pair of socks.

Before you go...

Don't forget your free printable copy of this checklist — perfect for taping inside your suitcase lid so you've always got it on hand.

If there's one thing you'll learn about me, it's that I love finding things that make life feel a little easier. Whether that's a travel essential, a parenting hack, a cozy self-care find, or something that simply makes me think, "Why didn't I know about this sooner?"

I'm grateful you're here and I hope you found something helpful. Wishing you comfort, calm, and a little less overwhelm wherever life takes you.
