The Ultimate Girls Trip Packing Checklist

There's a very specific kind of trip where you don't have to negotiate the pool schedule with a six-year-old, nobody needs a snack forty minutes after breakfast, and the only itinerary is whatever your group decides over coffee that morning. A girls trip. Whether it's a weekend away with your college friends, a milestone birthday trip, or just a long-overdue "we all need this" getaway, the packing list looks nothing like the one I build for a family beach trip — and it deserves its own.
I've said before that booking a salon appointment before a trip sounds nice in theory and almost never survives contact with real life. So a few trips ago, my friends and I started doing our own nails on the hotel room floor instead, and it's become one of my favorite parts of any trip we take together. No time slots, no small talk with someone you just met, just us, a bottle of wine, and everyone's toiletry bags spread across two queen beds.
This is the master list I keep coming back to — the one I actually pull from every time one of us starts a group chat with "okay, what do we need to bring." It pulls together everything from the self-care basics that keep me from coming home more depleted than I left, to the beach bag, to the

Self-Care & Skin
I run warm even at home, so put me somewhere with real heat and humidity and my skin lets me know about it fast — chapped lips, chafed thighs, hands that feel like sandpaper by day two. These are the small, unglamorous things that keep me from feeling wrecked by the time we're supposed
to be getting ready for dinner.
The face mask is about as low-effort as self-care gets — I put it on before bed and let it do the work while I'm asleep, which is honestly all I have energy for by the time we're done with dinner and drinks. The anti-chafe balm goes on before we even leave the room for the day, not after — heat, humidity, and hours of walking around somewhere new is a guaranteed recipe for it, and once it starts it ruins the whole afternoon.
My hands crack and dry out faster than anyone else's in the group — something about the sun, the pool, and switching between five different products a day — so this handcream is the one stays in my own bag, not the shared one. And with four of us sharing one bathroom counter, the hanging toiletry bag is what keeps my stuff from disappearing into everyone else's pile — it hooks over the shower rod or a door and just holds its own little section.
The DIY Mani-Pedi Kit
A proper salon setup does not fit in a carry-on, so this is the pared-down version that actually works on a hotel room floor.
The manicure set is the whole reason this works on a hotel room floor instead of a salon chair — clippers, file, cuticle pusher, all of it in one zip pouch instead of five different drawers back home. And with a whole room full of us doing nails at once, one nail file never makes it through the night — that's the 25-pack talking, not me being extra. We always bring both press on nails and regular nail polish, everyone has their preferences.
The fast-drying glue is for the almost-inevitable press-on that pops off somewhere between painting and pouring the second round of wine — five seconds and you're back in it instead of sitting out the rest of the session. The cuticle remover is what makes the whole thing look intentional instead of like four women attacked their own hands with a nail file, which, let's be honest, is exactly what's happening.
Someone always wants to start over halfway through — wrong color, chipped already, changed her mind — and this is what makes that a two-minute redo instead of a whole thing with the acetone remover -
ProTip: don't the whole bottle, put some in a travel bottle and put that in a zip lock bag because you don't want that leaking!! .
Poolside & Beach
This is the stuff that actually gets used — the float we fight over, the aloe someone always ends up passing around after one too many hours in the sun, the lip balm that saves you from cracked lips halfway through the trip. Nobody's rationing snacks or reapplying sunscreen on a kid here, so the only job is staying cool and not burning.
The aloe spray is what gets passed around by whoever caught a little too much sun that first day — someone always does, and it's a lot better having it in someone's bag than trying to find a pharmacy on vacation. The lip balm has SPF built in because my lips burn and crack just as fast as my shoulders
do, and cracked lips halfway through a trip is its own special kind of miserable. I am also going to need to apply aftersun at the end of the day (and possible through the day) so this is my favourite.
The hammock float is the one everyone actually fights over by day two — there's always exactly one good float and never enough of it to go
around. The water shoes are for whatever beach turns out to be rockier than the photos made it look, which happens more often than you'd think.
The waterproof pouch means my phone actually comes in the water with me instead of sitting on a towel where someone has to babysit it the whole time we're all in. The towel clips are a small thing, but they're the difference between your towel staying put on a lounge chair and chasing it down the beach every time the wind picks up.
Going Out & On the Go
Getting ready together — music on, everyone passing the good mirror back and forth — is half the fun of a girls trip, and this is what actually makes it out the door with us: the charger someone always needs by hour two, the sunglasses you'll lose if they're not on your face, the earbuds for the flight when you just want a little quiet before the trip even starts.
The sunglasses are the one thing I will absolutely lose if they're not on my face the second we step outside — polarized because glare off water and
pool decks gives me a headache faster than almost anything else on a trip. The portable charger is the thing someone in the group is always asking to borrow by hour two of a day out, because between photos and texting everyone back home, nobody's phone makes it to dinner on its own battery.
The earbuds are for the flight, honestly — a little quiet before the trip has even started is its own kind of self-care, especially with four of us catching up at full volume the second we sit down. The eye drops are for that same flight, plus every day after it — between the recycled airplane air and the sun, my eyes are drier by day two than they are the entire rest of the year.
The tripod means we actually get a group photo where everyone's in it instead of the one person always stuck behind the camera. The Kindle is for whenever the group naturally splits off for an hour — someone's napping, someone's on the phone with home, and I've got a book instead of scrolling.
Shared Room Essentials
Three women, two queen beds, and everyone's stuff everywhere by day one — this is what keeps the room from turning into a disaster and keeps someone from leaving a charger or a retainer behind at checkout. And after staying up too late catching up, a sleep mask is the difference between actually resting and being the one who's dragging by lunch.
Packing cubes mean my stuff stays my stuff instead of turning into one big pile with everyone else's by day two, which matters a lot more sharing a room with three other people than it ever does traveling with just my husband. The vacuum-seal bags are how I fit going-out clothes and day clothes in the same suitcase without needing a second bag just for the trip home.
The trackers go on anything that's easy to leave behind at checkout — a charger, a retainer case, whatever gets shoved in a nightstand drawer at 1am and forgotten. And after staying up too late catching up every single night of the trip, the sleep mask is the difference between actually resting and being the one who's dragging by lunch the next day.
This one's less exciting than everything else on this list and probably the most important thing in my bag — between four of us and however many vitamins, medications, and prescriptions are floating around one shared bathroom, it's a lot easier to keep my own stuff straight when it's already sorted before we even leave in a pill organizer.
Keeping Things Clean
Between shared bathrooms, hotel gym equipment, and however many hands end up in the shared bag of snacks in the rental car, this is the low-key stuff that keeps everyone from coming home sick or living out of a suitcase that smells like the whole trip by the time you land.
The laundry bag keeps worn clothes separate from clean ones in a suitcase that's already tight on space, which matters more when four people's stuff is somehow all competing for the same closet. The wipes come out for everything from a sticky rental car cupholder to a hotel gym mat nobody trusts — a group of us sharing surfaces all week is exactly how everyone ends up sick by the last day.
This is the last line of defense for the shared bag of snacks that somehow ends up with every single one of our hands in it before we've even left the airport parking lot. Gotta have the hand sanitizer!!

A cabin weekend and a city break need very different things — if you're not leaving the lake house, skip the heels and the statement jewellery. If nobody's driving, ignore the car stuff. And if this is a group where everyone over-packs "just in case," it's worth a quick group chat about what you can share instead of each bringing your own. One hair straightener between four people is plenty.
Two items on here aren't really things, and they're the two I'd actually push you not to skip: the downloaded group playlist and a plan for splitting costs. Both take five minutes before you leave and save a lot of low-grade friction once you're there.
